Training

Pool training sessions are carried out between early November and the end of March on Monday nights (20:15-22:00 h) at the Aberdeen Grammar School swimming pool. There, trainees are instructed on a one-to-one basis by qualified instructors on various underwater skills, starting by snorkelling and soon thereafter progressing onto the use of SCUBA equipment. After the pool, we generally pop into a nearby pub (No.10) for a drink and a chat. Regular theory lectures are normally held in blocks at a suitable location.

We generally organise try-a-dive sessions, where all equipment is provided, all the way until early December. You need to start before December to be able to complete your pool training by the spring, but if you are a qualified diver or just fancy a try in the pool, do contact us anytime. After December, dates and any relevant details for the next season will be confirmed in the early autumn to anyone who contacts us.

You can find indicative information about equipment costs on some websites (see the Other Clubs section of our Web Links). However, other than the basic pool equipment (fins, mask, snorkel), all the pool training equipment is provided by the club. Unlike other commercial (and even amateur!) diving organisations, training is free to all our club members (our aim is not to make money!). The only fees that members (new and old) pay are the annual membership to the Scottish Sub-Aqua Club (see http://www.scotsac.com for details) and the Grampian Branch (£10/month for regular members and £5/month for students). For full joining instructions, see "SSAC joining instructions" in the Downloads section.

Divers qualified by other organisations can have their qualification converted to a SSAC equivalent on joining our club by following a crossover schedule. We welcome trained divers and we will take into account your level of qualification and your experience.
